Our products start in the forest
Tembec’s products start in the forest – a renewable resource – so well-managed forests truly make sense for our business, our communities and the environment.
Tembec is a global leader in sustainable forest management practices
In 2001, Tembec became the first large public forest products company in Canada to make the commitment to utilize standards developed by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and seek certification on all company forest management units. By 2008, Tembec had certified 100% of the public forestlands under its management, and also achieved FSC Chain-of-Custody certification.
Tembec now directly manages nearly 9 million hectares (22 million acres) of forestlands – an area more than twice the size of Switzerland – all of which is FSC certified.
We have one of the world’s largest FSC-certified forest products offerings. This includes the FSC-certified specialty cellulose products we manufacture at Temiscaming (FSC® C0017431) and Tartas (FSC® C009386).
Tembec's FSC Chain of Custody certification assures consumers that our products are derived from fiber harvested from responsible sources.
Tembec specialty cellulose products made at Tartas, France, are PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified. PEFC Chain-of-Custody assures customers that fiber originates in PEFC-certified operations, which follow responsible forest practices. For more information on PEFC, go to www.pefc.org.
Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement: Protecting the world’s largest forest
Nine environmental groups and 21 forest products companies (including Tembec) signed the CBFA, designed to protect a forest that stretches across the country, covering more than 76 million hectares.
- Companies agreed to suspend logging in protected areas covering nearly 29 million hectares and commit to the highest standards of forest management.
- Environmentalists agreed to suspend campaigns and globally recognize and support the signing companies.
